MTC suspends services to villages after potholes dot roads

The residents of Thalambur and surrounding areas claim that the condition of the road worsened over the last few months and this forced the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) to cancel its services.

The OMR-Medavakkam link road that stretches for 10 km houses several engineering colleges, commercial complexes and apartments. The road also links nearly 30 villages in and around the area. According to sources, over 40,000 vehicles use the road on a daily basis.

“Since the road is damaged we are forced to take a longer route to reach our destination,” said a frequent commuter.

Karthick, another commuter from Thalambur,  said, “Because of the road’s condition, the MTC services were cancelled and the residents are the affected lot. The main reason behind the damaged road is that many container lorries use the road on a daily basis. 

Though the road is not strong enough for these heavy vehicles, it worsens the condition.”  He further added that the heavy vehicles should not be allowed to use the road.

Thalambur village panchayat secretary R Monoharan said that the road was re-laid two and a half years ago. “The road is maintained by the Rural Highway Department and they have asked the highways to repair the road.

“It will be re-laid after the winter. For now, damages will be repaired temporarily by the panchayat,” Monoharan said.
