Local villagers noticed the problem on the track near Ammampalayam situated between Thalaivasal and Attur in Salem district. They then saw the Virudhachalam-Salem passenger train approaching around 7.30 am.

Acting swiftly, the villagers showed a red flag signalling the train to stop. Sensing something to be amiss, the crew brought the train to a halt a little distance away from the spot.

Sources said the soil might have been washed away due to the heavy rain witnessed in the area on Thursday night.

On receiving information, the railway staff arrived and filled the spot with mud by engaging earth movers. After ensuring that the track was safe, the train resumed its journey, which was delayed by almost an hour. Thereafter, the railway staff continued with the work to strengthen the track.

Just a couple of hours before the problem was spotted, the Chennai Egmore- Salem train had passed through around 4.30 am.
