According to sources, Ramasamy (70) of Thandarampattu, who was unmarried and had no relatives, was found lying near the Tiruvannamalai bus stand a few days ago. With an arm and leg paralysed, Ramaswamy could not fend for himself.

Seeing his plight, locals contacted social worker Manimaran, who provided him with new clothes and food. Thereafter, Maniraman took him to the Tiruvannamalai government medical college hospital, where he was given first aid and then admitted as an inpatient.

Manimaran said, “When I visited him on Wednesday, I found him very weak and blood was dripping from the intravenous needle, which was inserted into his hand to give him glucose. It was caused by the negligent attitude of the hospital staff. So, I informed Collector Kandasamy about the old man’s plight and thereafter, he ordered the hospital staff to treat him well.”

He also provided the old man, who was too weak to even talk, with food and water and ensured that the Collector’s orders were carried out.
