    Politicos line up to pay homage to Immanuel Sekaran

    People from various districts and members of caste outfits thronged the memorial of Dalit leader Immanuel Sekaran at Paramakudi, Ramanathapuram, to pay their homage at the leader’s 61st death anniversary.

    The family members of the late Dalit leader along with the local people of Sellur, the native place of the leader, gathered at the memorial and paid their respects. Leaders and representatives of political parties, including DMK, AIADMK, MDMK, Congress, Left parties, AMMK, Puthiya Tamilagam, VCK and Tamizhaga Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam paid floral tributes at the leader’s memorial. 

    Three tier security measures were in place to prevent any untoward incident in the district. Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Vijay Kumar and Inspector General of Police (South Zone), KP Shanmuga Rajeswaran inspected the security arrangements and deployed 5,000 police personnel. Ramanathapuram Superintendent of Police, Omprakash Meena said the proceedings was peaceful since morning. Apart from local strength, 17 Superintendents of Police, 18 Additional Superintendents of Police and 31 Deputy Superintendents of Police were involved in monitoring the proceedings. “Besides, surveillance was mounted with the aid of an unmanned aerial vehicle, 73 CCTV surveillance cameras and 75 handy cams,” the SP said. 

    Further, the movement of public was monitored at 18 check posts leading to the memorial, 50 striking force personnel, 34 four-wheeler patrol and 32 two-wheeler patrol. To regulate the crowd, 750 barricades were put up. Unlike last year, routes were changed and one-way traffic was allowed for vehicles.
