Town and country planning Deputy Director runs separate 37-staff office to get ‘bribe’ in Vellore

A surprise raid by Vellore vigilance police in the local town and country planning deputy director’s office revealed unaccounted cash to the tune of Rs 3.25 lakh in the early hours of Saturday. Interestingly, this also led the team to another office being run by the same director nearby, where he had hired 37 people, for a monthly salary, presumably to look after the ill-gotten money.

The raids came after the police received repeated complaints of various malpractices being indulged in by the deputy director M Subramaniam. Vigilance police arrived at his office around 7 pm and also prevented the staff from either leaving or entering the premises. A search revealed the unaccounted cash which was with 11 office staff.

Following information that Subramaniam was operating another office illegally nearby, the police team took the deputy director to the other office situated on double road, phase III and found furniture meant for the original office being used there. The team also learnt that Subramaniam had hired 37 people at a monthly salary of Rs10,000 while a retired government official was hired for Rs 20,000 per month, allegedly to manage the ‘extra’ money.

When reports last came in, police said they had informed the Chennai director of town and country planning and hence were yet to register a case against Subramaniam, who is yet to be arrested. The double road office, where Subramaniam allegedly carried out illegal transaction has also not been sealed, only locked. The raid ended at 3 am on Saturday.
