In 2012, the IOC had reportedly commenced laying of underground pipes in Tiruvarur to transport petroleum products to storage plants in Tiruchy. However, the works were stopped due to protests by the locals.
Now, after six years, IOC again commenced the laying of pipes through the villages of Sorakkudi, Moongilkudi, Moolangudi, Kakka Kottur and Omakkualm. The pipes were allegedly unload on Thursday night at the field of Umadevi in Sorakkudi, where direct sowing of samba paddy was taken up.
On information, the land owner and other farmers staged a protest on Friday. They demanded the pipes be removed and also warned of a massive protest if attempts were made to forcibly lay the pipes in the paddy fields.
