Sources said that PVK Palaniswamy, an AIADMK functionary and a former district panchayat council member, visited the Manapparai police station late on Tuesday evening to enquire about the case.
The conversation between Palaniswamy and Kennedy, the Inspector, took a serious turn following which the former was allegedly attacked by Kennedy.
Palaniswamy, who sustained severe injuries, was rushed to a private hospital. He was reportedly kept under ventilator till Wednesday morning.
Meanwhile, on receiving information about the incident, nearly 300 AIADMK men gathered and laid siege to the station demanding the police department to either suspend or transfer the erring Inspector.
Subsequently, the Manapparai DSP rushed to the spot and tried to pacify the protesting AIADMK cadres.Â
After receiving assurance that appropriate action would be taken, all the protesters dispersed. Â
After holding an enquiry into the matter, DIG (Tiruchy Range) Lalitha Lakshmi on Wednesday passed orders placing Kennedy in the waiting list.
