A release from the Raj Nivas said Bedi visited the channel, which is the main feeder channel for the sprawling lake in Bahoor in the Union Territory and 13 tanks in its vicinity, besides eight other tanks in neighbouring Tamil Nadu.
Bedi, accompanied by the district collector, PWD chief engineer and other officers, also travelled to Sornavur Anaicut from where the Bangaru channel has its origin.
By desilting this channel and ensuring that it is not choked mid-way either by growth of bushes, encroachments and accumulations, it would ensure that the 13 tanks fed by it receive copious amount of water and combined with Sitheri channel. The Bangaru channel would fill to the brim and also the ten other tanks in Bahoor village and adjoining areas.
Farmers would have assured flow of tank water for irrigation, the release said.
Tamil Nadu PWD officials who were present at the site produced a written agreement between the governments of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry fixing the responsibility of maintenance of Bangaru channel.
The release further said that a joint committee of PWD and Revenue department officials of Puducherry and also members of the Tank Users Association was formed on the spot to carry out desilting and for maintenance of the channel.
The district collector will document and monitor the progress made in desilting the feeder channel.
