Robbery was a ploy by actor Senthil’s relative, says SP
A 40-year-old woman, who was reportedly robbed of her jewels on Tuesday, had staged the robbery drama as she had pledged the jewels in different banks and was not able to return them to its owner, said sources on Wednesday.
Madurai
G Uma (40) of Kamuthi in Ramanathapuram district, who is a relative of actor Senthil, was reportedly robbed of 300 sovereigns after a gang of three unidentified persons snatched her bag away while she was returning home.
Thereafter, the woman sought help from the Kamuthi police saying that the bag contained jewels, which were reportedly taken out from a locker of Ramanathapuram District Central Cooperative Bank.
However, Ramanathapuram SP Omprakash Meena dismissed the claims, saying that the woman was found guilty of cheating since the jewels were not in her possession. The CCTV footage recorded near the bank showed no evidence of robbery as there was no movement of vehicles at that point of time, he added.
After inquiries, the investigating team raised doubts whether the woman had pledged the jewels in some other banks, which turned out to be true. Later, the woman confessed that she had pledged about 60 to 70 in various banks. However, eight special teams were formed to verify and check the documents that were being maintained in the banks.
Investigations revealed that in 2014, the woman’s sister had given her around 300 sovereigns to keep. The jewels were meant for the wedding of one of their relatives. Since, Uma had pledged some of the jewels and could not manage to return them ahead of the wedding, she created the drama, the SP said.
