PTA lodges complaint against teacher who refuses to teach

In a unusual incident, students, teachers, headmaster and members of the school’s PTA SMC (School Management Committee) and SMDC (School Management and Development Committee) of the government higher secondary school at Sholavaram near Vellore have petitioned CEO S Mars demanding action against a teacher, who worked only for 10 days in the current academic year.

“Their anguish is due to the fact that the Shoavaram school is one of those rare government institutions, which tries to be on par with private institutions” says social activist K Sathiyamoorthy. “This is a school where smart class rooms are functional and aims at producing 100% results from last year’s 96.4 %” he added.

SMC president SR Murugan told DT Next, “The teacher, N Kulasekaran, in question has only a few years of service left and instead of being a role model for others does everything to bring down the morale of the school and its staff. He handles classes by clubbing three class 12 sections of 120 students and follows the same with class 11 by clubbing 110 students of three sections. He bluntly refused to take individual classes when approached by the school’s PTA and SMC.”

Reiterating this PTA representative V Sivagami said,“As our efforts failed we have been forced to lodge a complaint. When teachers are trying their best to place the school on par with private institution, Kulasekaran’s attitude is demoralising.”

However, it is not only higher secondary students who are affected as a petition signed by 26 students of class 9’s section E states that Kulasekaran refused to teach or come to the class saying that he could not teach them.

On the administrative front, headmaster MA Jayachandrakumar petitioned the CEO that Kulasekaran never submitted notes of lessons, refused to submit attendance sheet for duty at the Poigai government HSS. He has not collected the English answer scripts of higher secondary classes of the last mid- term tests and had not submitted medical or fitness certificates after being on sick leave between July 24 and August 19. “The litany of woes - including not taking special classes, not attending class 9 English classes, refusing to go on deputation, not submitting his service register, threatening the HM over phone and working for only 10 days from June 1 this year,” continues for two pages in the HM’s missive to the CEO.

Asked about this, CEO S Mars said “I have summoned both the HM and Kulasekaran for an inquiry on Thursday for an inquiry. Otherwise the issue may even take a toll on the school.” SMC president Murugan said “We also plan to go to Vellore on Thursday to meet the CEO to reiterate our charges.”
