Justice R. Mahadevan before whom a petition from Akram of Vaniyambadi, Vellore District, came up disposed the plea after recording the submission of Additional Advocate General in this regard.

Stating that while the cost of production of each egg comes to around Rs.2.75 the selling price is fixed at Rs.4.50 per egg, the petitioner contended that State has not taken any effort to regulate the procurement price/purchase price of eggs from egg producers as done in paddy and sugarcane procurement.

Alleging that NECC, a private body, is playing a critical role in determining the price at which the egg traders supply to noon meal scheme, the petitioner said the above body is not bothered to fix a reasonable price since its concern is merely to earn good profit for its members.

He also noted that his representation sought to take corrective steps by fixing procurement price and selling price of eggs in such a fashion that it is available at a reasonable price of Rs.3 per egg or as may be decided by the Expert committee. But the Government is yet to respond, he submitted.
