The Governor also unveiled the statue of freedom fighter GS Laxmana Iyer at DS Raman and Sarojini Devi hostel campus at Gobichettipalayam in Erode district.
Speaking after unveiling the statue, Purohit termed Laxmana as a true Gandhian, who was instrumental in banning manual scavenging in Gobichettipalayam municipality for the first time in the country. Laxmana was then chairman of the municipality.
Further, Purohit said that for India to emerge as one of the leaders of the international community, it is necessary that the nation is strong, economically prosperous, culturally vibrant and socially united.
“Education is the basic requirement for a person to make useful economic and social contributions to the society. We need an education system through which character is formed, the strength of mind increased and the intellect expanded. Only this can help a person to stand on his own feet,” he said.
Purohit later received petitions from the public at the Kalingarayan guest house. He also took part in Swachh Bharat activities including the inauguration of a photo exhibition at the municipal bus stand, besides flagging off a ‘ratham’.
He also visited a night shelter home near the VOC Park and administered the clean India pledge at the VOC walkers club.
