CB-CID reply sought on shifting Nirmala case

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Monday directed the CB-CID, which has been investigating into a controversial audio tape scandal involving Nirmala Devi, an assistant professor of private college in Arupukottai and two others including assistant professor V Murugan and research scholar Karuppasamy, to file counter affidavit in a bail plea filed by Murugan.

Nirmala Devi and the two others were arrested after she was accused of luring girl students with wrongful intent. The petition by Murugan, who remains in detention for 123 days, came up for hearing before the single bench Judge GK Ilanthirayan.

Referring to the audio tape, petitioner counsel T Lajapathi Roy argued that the words uttered by Nirmala Devi were not directly connected with the scandal alleging her involvement, but were related to higher officials of Madurai Kamaraj University.

Top officials could have been related to the case, which the government is attempting to hide, targeting the two assistant professors and the research scholar as the accused, he argued. Hence, the bench should transfer the case to other state and prayed that Murugan be granted bail, he said.

However, Chellapandian,  Additional Advocate General, argued that based on evidence, the bench had already denied bail for Karuppasamy, the third accused.

Thereafter, the bench directed the CB-CID to file counter affidavit and adjourned the case to September 4.
