TNCC chief blames sand mining for dam damage
Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president Su Thirunavukkarasar blamed unmitigated sand quarrying on the Cauvery River for the shutters of Mukkombu getting washed away in the recent floods.
Tiruvannamalai
Speaking to reporters here on Friday after having a darshan at the Sri Arunachaleswarar Temple, he also urged the government to ensure the security and safety of all the dams in the state.Â
On the lines of the demand made by AMMK deputy general secretary TTV Dhinakaran, PMK founder S Ramadoss and DMK working president MK Stalin, the TNCC chief called upon the state government to constitute a committee of technical experts to look into the matter.Â
Action should also be taken to ensure that all water bodies get filled up in contrast to water not reaching tail end areas of the Cauvery despite heavy outflows from the Stanley Reservoir at Mettur. He explained that this situation came about due to lack of proper maintenance of channels and also because the PWD was more bothered about getting commission than in undertaking their regular works.
Referring to increased incidences of crime against women, he said this was due to the lack of enough police personnel to undertake regular patrolling. He called on the state to fill up all police vacancies.
