Almost elven out of fourteen districts were ravaged by flood waters. Several people were displaced by the flood, lost their belongings and rendered homeless.

According to ICG Station Commander Deputy Inspector General, SB Venkatesh, a total of 100 personnel had been involved in the rescue operation over the last two days and were still engaged in the operation. With lifesaving equipment, the personnel had been working heart and soul to help save lives of the displaced. The ICG ship ‘Vaibhav’, which was engaged in a routine patrol operation at mid seas in the south off Kanyakumari coast, was diverted to carry out rescue operations in the flood affected Chalakudy and other parts in Kerala. Four rubber inflatable boats on board the ICG Ship had been utilised to rescue the flood victims, Venkatesh added.

“After offloading such boats, trucks were used to move the boats from one place to another. Each of the rescue boat could carry fifteen victims. Mostly, women and children were rescued and taken to accommodate them in relief shelters,” he said.

The ICG personnel were on alert to render possible assistance to the victims. Currently, the rescue personnel moved to Changanassery to help secure displaced persons, the DIG said. Anwar Sadath, Aluva MLA thanked the ICG personnel. Moreover, the ICG Tuticorin contributed ten tonnes of relief material essential for the flood victims in Kerala, he said.
