Vellore
Parthiban (28) of Perumalpet near Vaniyambadi, currently serving in Assam, had come home on leave a few days ago.
Trouble erupted between Parthiban and one Jawahar (27) over the setting up of fireworks as part of the festival. As both Parthiban and Jawahar nearly came to blows, locals intervened in the issue and pacified them. However, Jawahar came back later with his aides and tried to stab Parthiban with a knife.
When Parthiban put up his hand to escape the blow to his head, his right hand was chopped off at the wrist.
On information, the Vaniyambadi town police arrived at the scene of crime and rushed both Parthiban and his severed hand to the Vaniyambadi Government Hospital.
He was later shifted to the Vellore Government Medical College Hospital for further treatment.
