It may be noted that a private distillery was functioning at Lingareddippalayam and the same was closed twenty years back following agitation by the villagers since it depleted the ground water and polluted the environment.

According to the villagers, there is a move now on the part of the government to re-open the distillery after closing down the Lingareddippalayam cooperative sugar mills.

Hearing the news, farmers from ten villages of Puducherry and also from Tamil Nadu gathered in the ground in front of the cooperative sugar mill on Sunday evening and took a decision not to permit the reopening of the distillery. It was decided to organise an agitation on August 28 if the government proceed to reopen the distillery.

Lok Sabha former member from Puducherry M Ramadass on Monday said that Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi returning the letter of the Chief Minister addressed to her without even reading it and terming it as ‘impolite’ is a great disgrace and insult to CM Narayanasamy and a severe jolt to the democratic norms. In a statement, Ramadass said it only demonstrates the alarming dimension of the political feud between the two constitutional authorities.
