    Low pressure in Bay may bring rain to districts

    A low pressure that has formed in north-west of Bay of Bengal is expected to bring heavy rains in the coastal regions, said Balachandran, Director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, in Chennai, on Monday.

    Addressing the media, Balachandran said that apart from the low pressure, the upper air circulation in Karnataka would strengthen the westerlies. Owing to this activity, districts close to western ghats like The Nilgiris, Coimbatore and Theni might experience heavy rain for the next two days.

    However, the downpour would be moderate in other parts of the state. “In the rest of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, there will mild showers. In the last 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on Monday, Pollachi received the highest rainfall of 10 cm followed by Chinnakallar, near Valparai, with 9 cm,” said Balachandran.

    He also added that due to the low pressure in the Bay of Bengal, fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea, particularly in northern and central parts of the Bay, and told to avoid the region near Andaman islands.

    Regarding the forecast for Chennai, Balachandran said that the city and its suburbs might witness a few moderate spells during the evenings and nights.

    Meanwhile, there was scattered rain in different parts of the city and suburbs on Monday. Some areas experienced moderate showers. The sky remained overcast in the city and neighbouring districts throughout the day.

    Flood warning issued to 12 districts

    In view of the rain forecast for the state and the heavy flow in the Cauvery, flood warning has been issued for 12 districts, with most of them falling in the delta region, said K Satyagopal, Commissioner of Revenue Administration (CRA), in Chennai, on Monday.

    Talking to media persons, Satyagopal said that the warning would apply to delta region and a few other districts including Dharmapuri, Salem, Cuddalore and Nagapattinam. The state government have advised the district collectors to remain alert and undertake all precautionary measure to tackle any eventuality.

    As The Nilgiris district, which has been experiencing the monsoon fury for the past couple of days, the Collector had instructed to monitor the situation round-the-clock. 

    Inter-departmental zonal teams led by Tahsildars. These teams will have members from police, fire and rescue services department, agriculture, PWD, rural development besides others, said Satyagopal.

    “The teams will inspect all areas and monitor the water level. If the teams sense danger in any pocket, it will instruct people residing in those places to move to safety. 

    Relief centres have been opened in five places in Erode district, two in Namakkal and one in Salem to provide shelter for people affected in the flood,” the official said.

    He also said that people could contact 1070 to reach the state emergency operation centre and 1077 at the district level in case of any emergency.

    Alert for residents as Bhavani in spate

    Coimbatore: A flood alert has been issued to people living on the banks of Bhavani River in Mettupalayam in the district as 6,000 cusecs of water was being released from the Pilloor Dam, officials said on Monday. With heavy rains being experienced in Coimbatore and neighbouring Nilgiris and other districts, the dam, already full, was receiving 10,000 cusecs of water, they said. Besides, surplus water from Kunda Dam in nearby Nilgiris district was also being let into Bhavani river and hence there could be possibility of it overflowing, District Collector TN Hariharan said in a statement. 

    8 booked for bathing in Cauvery in Tiruchy
    Tiruchy: Eight persons were arrested for allegedly taking bath in the flooding Cauvery river despite warning issued by the administration here on Monday. According to police, following the flood alert in Kollidam and Cauvery rivers, the district administration had placed an order of restricting people from entering into the gushing waters. Since many people especially youth got drowned in the past one month, strong warning were issued. Subsequently, the people were allowed to enter into the Cauvery waters within the barricade portions. However, it is said that a few youths continued to violate the restriction by entering into the flooding waters. Thus, police booked eight youths on Monday.
