Sources said siblings R Rajamanickam and R Lakshmanan of West Street in Veerasingampettai had hired an earthmoving equipment to dig several pits for planting coconut saplings. When the equipment was digging the 50th pit, the earthmover suddenly hit some object.Â
Following this, the soil was carefully removed. They found a five-foot high Brahma idol made of granite. The idol had a five-headed snake figure on the rear.Â
Revenue department officials were informed about the find, following which Tiruvaiyaru Tahsildar Latha visited the spot and inspected the idol.Â
Further action would be taken for safekeeping of the idol in an appropriate place after getting instructions from the District Collector, sources said.Â
Experts would inspect the idol and ascertain the time it was sculpted. Â
Keep it in Siva temple, say locals
Meanwhile, the residents of Veerasingampettai performed pooja and offered prayers to the idol. They urged the district administration to keep it in the Siva temple in the village for devotees to worship.
