2 students drown in two rivers at Kumbakonam
Two teenage students drowned in rivers near Kumbakonam in two separate incidents on Sunday.

Mohammed Nizar (17), of Fathima Nagar in Vilandakandam near Kumbakonam, was a first year diploma student at a private polytechnic college in Kallapuliyur.Â
He had gone to take bath in Kollidam river at Maharajapuram on Sunday evening along with his friends. While he was taking bath, sources said that he was washed away by the strong current of the river.Â
His friends attempted to rescue him but in vain. They immediately informed Nizar’s relatives about the incident.
On information, the fire and rescue service personnel from Kumbakonam searched at Maharajapuram on Monday and retrieved the body of the Nizar. Tiruppandal police have registered a case.
Meanwhile, in the second incident, M Genin Gregory (15), of West main street in Ammanpettai near Tiruvidaimarudur, had gone to fetch water from Pazhavaru near his locality on Sunday, when he was washed away.
Sources said Gregory suddenly fell into the river and was washed away. After being alerted, the fire and rescue service personnel attached to the Tiruvidaimarudur fire station launched a search operation and retrieved the body of the student. Tiruvidaimarudur police have registered a case. The victim was a Class 10 student in an government-aided higher secondary school.
