“The Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) on Wednesday issued a certificate of drunkenness after examining him. It was then the blood and urine samples were sent for a lab test, which have turned negative for traces of alcohol,” said City Police Commissioner K Periaiah.

Six persons, including three women, died after the rashly driven car ploughed into the crowd waiting for bus in Sundarapuram on Wednesday. The luxury car was driven at a high speed to pick up the chairman of a private college when the incident happened. The SUV was moving at a speed of over 100 km at the time and it was captured in a CCTV fixed at the spot.

“As the driver has been charged with homicide not amounting to murder, there is legal provision to jail him, for not less than ten years,” said the Commissioner.

The top cop also said that efforts would be taken to set up a speed breaker at the place of mishap and also crack down on drunken driving across the city. The police have recommended to the RTO officials to cancel the licence of Jagadeesan and also warned that similar stringent action would be taken on vehicle drivers caught for drunken driving. Meanwhile, a team of traffic police monitored the vehicles for over speeding at the spot, where the mishap happened.
