In his petition, S Ramamurthy, a resident of Karunkali village in Anaicut taluk, said he has been confined to a wheelchair ever since a fall in the bathroom.

He then watched a TV advertisement which promised a cure for his ailment. Believing the advertisement, Ramamurthy visited a Walajahpet-based doctor, who demanded Rs 60,000 for the treatment.

Convinced that he would be cured, Ramamurthy pledged his sister’s jewellery and paid the amount to the doctor. He was given some bottles of oil, which he was asked to consume as well as apply on the affected body parts.

The oil, Ramamurthy said, not only worsened his condition but also changed his appearance. He requested Collector SA Raman to arrest the dp and help retrieve the money he had paid.
