An official, from the state tourism department told DTNext, that better land and air connectivity coupled with the presence of large number of temples in Tamil Nadu makes it an attractive destination for both domestic and foreign tourists.

“Mahabalipuram and Madurai receive the maximum number of tourists mainly because of the temples,” said the official. He added that stable law and order condition also encourages tourists to visit the place.

“We do not hear of incidents where tourists were attacked in the state and that is one of the reasons that they take into consideration while choosing to visit Tamil Nadu,” said the official.

The state government is also taking various measures to improve tourism with the latest being a cruise tourism programme for which Rs 350 crore has been allotted. Chennai is among the spots selected for developing cruise jetties to facilitate tourism.
