    Governor stresses need for cleanliness during Dindigul visit

    A day after spending time with students and faculty members of Gandhigram Rural Institute, Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit stressed on the need to raise public awareness on maintaining cleanliness through Swachh Bharat Mission in Dindigul on Thursday.

    Speaking to students of educational institutions and the public at RM Colony, he administered ‘Clean India’ pledge urging the need to keep the environment clean. Forest Minister Dindigul C Sreenivasan was also present at the event. The Governor, to promote its objective, flagged off the ‘Swachh Bharat rath yatra ’ in the presence of R Rajagopal, Additional Chief Secretary to the Governor, Collector TG Vinay, Superintendent of Police R. Sakthivel, District Revenue Officer, Velu and officials from various departments, sources said.  

    Subsequently, the Governor swept the dirt with a broom at the locality after inaugurating a photo exhibition to showcase a wide range of sanitation techniques and solid waste management. He also inaugurated a kids park at the locality under Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) scheme. The park, spread on 4,500 square meters, was established at a cost of Rs 1.20 crore. He appealed to the Corporation authorities to accord proper maintenance and bring up more seating arrangements for the elderly. 

    Later, facilities such as new Anganwadi centre, under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee programme, at a cost of Rs 8.50 lakh at Kamalapuram in Nilakottai taluk and a cowshed worth Rs 1.70 lakh were inaugurated. He also inspected low cost individual toilets built at a subsidized cost of Rs 12,000 each and stressed the need for maintaining hygiene. After meeting some people, representatives of voluntary organizations and political parties at the Government Guest House, the Governor received a total of 251 petitions, sources added.
