Addressing the students, the Governor said it was a moment of privilege and joy for him to visit at the place where the practical application of Mahatma Gandhi’s, father of the nation, ideas were carried out. It was Gandhi, an apostle of non-violence with his exceptional charisma, who undermined the British colonial rule and planted the seed of liberty in the hearts of people, said Purohit.Â
Highlighting his contributions, the Governor said Gandhi took forward the nation towards the path of economic autonomy and stood up against the caste system. The Governor recalled how Gandhi developed an interest in the spinning wheel so that people will not have to depend on imported garments. Purohit said, Gandhi encouraged the rural industry to take to the wheel and reduce import of foreign cloths.Â
Further, the Governor said Tamil Nadu always remained close to Gandhi’s heart. During his first visit to the state in 1896, he tried to learn Tamil and had bought nine Tamil books. On his subsequent visit to Madurai in 1921, he tried sporting a new attire, the Governor recalled. Dindigul Collector TG Vinay, Vice Chancellor of the Institute S Natarajan and Registrar VPR Sivakumar were also present at the event.Â
Earlier, the Governor was accorded a warm welcome by the members of ‘Shanti Sena’ on his arrival. Subsequently, he took a glance at the Gandhi museum and spent some time at Rural Energy Centre and took stock of exhibits of khadi and handicraft displayed on the premises of the institute. Moreover, the Governor also got access to a two-wheeler workshop and textile laboratory, sources said.
