Govt should help drama artistes: Nadigar Sangam

The Nadigar Sangam on Wednesday urged the State government to provide financial assistance to drama artistes and the children of artists who made their mark in the field of cinema.

The functionaries of the Sangam led by its president, Nasser, and former vice-president, Ponvannan, submitted a representation to Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on the welfare of drama artists reeling under poverty.

Addressing the media persons following the meeting, Ponvannan said, “For long, the drama artistes who are working to spread the government agenda are getting paid less. The Nadigar Sangam has requested the Chief Minister to increase their payment. We have also sought free bus passes for them.

” The State government was also requested to construct drama training halls in the memorials of Sivaji Ganesan and actors Thyagaraja Bagavathar and PU Chinnappa for the benefit of drama artists and public, said Ponvannan.

The functionaries thanked the Chief Minister for constructing a memorial for actor Sivaji Ganesan as well as for announcing his birthday to be celebrated as a government function. When asked about the allegations of Actor Sri Reddy and why the Nadigar Sangam has not responded to her complaints, Ponvannan and Nasser refrained from giving an answer.

“This is not the right place to ask questions about the internal problems of Nadigar Sangam,” said Ponvannan.
