    RPF collected Rs 82 lakh fine for littering Railway premises since January

    Railway Protection Force (RPF) seems to have given some serious thought to achieving the objectives of Swachh Bharat Mission of the union government. RPF sleuths in Southern Railway (SR) zone have collected a whopping Rs 82 lakh for littering alone since January last.

    RPF, which released the half yearly report of its performance for January-June 2018 period, claimed that over 37,740 persons were fined and a little over Rs 82.55 lakh was collected for littering in railway premises during the first six months of 2018. 

    During the same period, RPF had held 227 criminals in 208 cases under Railway Act and recovered property worth Rs 5.02 lakh. Also, Rs 1.32 crore was collected as fine and 282 criminals involved in passenger related offences were held by RPF staff and handed over to Government Railway Police (GRP).

    RPF had also seized contraband worth Rs 1.75 crore on 236 occasions and handed over 133 offenders to agencies concerned in the last six months. Over 80 passengers seek RPF help through Twitter every month Also, the Twitter page of RPF had gained reasonable traction. At least 83 people seek the assistance of RPF through Twitter every month.

    RPF had received 501 ‘help’ requests through Twitter, apart from the security helpline (no 182) which received 368 complaints from passengers during the  aforesaid period.

    Railways contribution 

    • 735 passengers who fell ill/were injured during train journeys were rendered first aid/taken for treatment to hospital by RPF personnel
    • 540 runaway/destitute children were rescued and handed them over to their parents/child help line
    • 52 missing women were rescued and handed over to their relatives/law enforcing  agencies concerned
    •  RPF in southern railway had retrieved 
    • passengers’ belongings like baggage, mobile phones and jewellery on 1,385 occasions 
    •  Four new Child Help Desks, now functional at Chennai Central, Chennai Egmore, Madurai and Kozhikode railway stations, to be set up at railway stations soon  
    •  On an average, 318 trains, including suburban trains and most of the night time services, are escorted daily by 730 RPF personnel  
    •  Four ladies special EMUs are escorted by a 
    • special team of women RPF called ‘Sakthi Padai’ and ladies coaches of 8 express trains are escorted by women RPSF personnel  
    •  Ladies coaches of 137 local trains operated in the evening and late night hours are also escorted by men RPF personnel
