Red sanders en route to Dubai seized

The high-value timber was found stacked inside a consignment declared as granite slabs destined to Dubai. The logs were kept hidden behind the slabs that were placed in the front portion of the container, a statement from DRI said. In June, DRI recalled a container that had sailed from Chennai to Malaysia in which 12.42 metric tonnes of red sanders logs were concealed behind bags of wheat flour. In 2017-18 fiscal, the Chennai Zonal Unit had seized 187.6 tonnes of the logs, while the bounty so far this financial year is around 56 tonnes of the wood, valued around Rs 22 crore approximately.
