Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami opened the sluice gates of the Mettur dam for irrigation in the delta districts on Thursday.
Initially, the Chief Minister opened 2,000 cubic meter water which will be increased to 20,000 by the evening.
Ministers, Salem collector Rohini Bhajibhakare, and other officials were present in the opening ceremony. Reportedly, this is the first time that the dam was opened by a Chief Minister.
Inspecting the dam, which surged to 102.73 feet at 8 am on Wednesday, Salem District Collector Rohini R Bhajibhakare appealed to people to avoid taking ‘selfie’ in the backdrop of flooded Cauvery. “People should desist from taking photos, selfies and bathing along the course of the river, which is likely to witness a heavy flow once the sluice gates are opened,” the Collector said.
