The latest move comes after a recent survey of all PTAs in the state revealed that in some associations, the representatives did not even appoint nominees, an official said adding “in some cases the PTAs have failed to maintain proper records detailing their activities.
Steps are being taken to replace these inactive PTAs immediately with a set of new nominees.”
Officials, who are monitoring the functioning of PTAs at both the district and state level, pointed out that most of the PTAs exist for namesake without undertaking any activity, especially since the last academic year.
A senior official from the Education Department recalled that the parent-teacher associations in the state was established in 1964 with an aim of creating a good relationship between parents and the teachers so that both the schools and students benefit to a desirable extent.
The association were formed aimed at facilitating the improvement of schools and also guide students in social, economic, cultural and educational activities.
Besides developing leadership qualities among students, the objective of PTA was to assist the parents and teachers to bring out literary magazines and organise cultural and library meetings as such activities will help to tap the hidden talent in students.
The PTA consists of parent representatives from all classes with a president and secretary for the association being nominated from the representatives.
Welcoming the government move, Tamil Nadu State Platform for Common School System (SPCSC) general secretary PB Prince Gajendra Babu said the revival of PTAs would be a major boost to school activities.
He also stressed that the officials who monitor the functioning of these associations should ensure that elections to these PTAs were held periodically and office-bearers were nominated in time.
