In a statement here, the SR said pulling alarm chain without valid and sufficient cause, was a punishable offence under Section 141 of the Railways Act, 1989.
The penalty would include imprisonment up to one year or a fine of Rs 1,000 or both.
Stating that instances of alarm chain pulling was on the rise, it said during the current year up to June, 744 cases were registered for unauthorized alarm chain pulling in Southern Railway.
A total of 737 persons were apprehended in this connection and a fine of Rs 2.8 lakh has been collected from them.
It was noticed that in most of the occasions, the alarm chain was pulled by the passengers for trivial reasons, which could be avoided such as co-passenger could not board/
alight, mobile/belongings fallen down or missing, passenger, who got down to purchase water/eatables enroute could not board the train, passenger overslept and missed destination, to mention a few.
The train, in which alarm chain was pulled, has to be detained for a considerable time for resolving the system.
Moreover, the delay in train operations due to alarm chain pulling also affects the running of the subsequent train services, causing hassles to passengers on-board these trains.
Appealing to the passengers to refrain from pulling the alarm chain, the SR said they could approach on-board railway staff like train captain, TTEs, RPF train escorts, coach attendants, for addressing issues that arise on the course of journey.
The services of All India RPF Security Helpline 182, which was functional round the clock, could be sought.
The 182 Helpline crew will alert the field RPF personnel and assistance will be arranged at the subsequent station.
The GRP Helpline 1512 could also be accessed for security related assistance, besides the rail passenger helpline 138 would also render assistance to passengers for redressal of their grievances pertaining to onboard amenities.
The RPF was keeping a close watch on violators and would take stringent action against those pulling the chain without justifiable reason.
