CPM to stage march against expressway
The State unit of CPM on Wednesday announced that it would stage a protest march on August 1 against the proposed Chennai-Salem Expressway project.
Chennai
The party passed a resolution to this effect at its ongoing state council meet here.
The protest march will be taken out from Tiruvannamalai to Salem, the party State secretary K Balakrishnan said in a statement.
“Those who refused to give lands for the projects are being threatened. Attempts of political parties and other rights organisations to offer support to farmers are being thwarted by arrests and attacks,” he said.
The proposed project has attracted criticism from various quarters including the principal opposition party Dravidar Munnetra Kazhagam.
Tamil Nadu unit Aam Aadmi Party convener SAN Vaseegaran was recently arrested for allegedly making “provocative” statements against the state and the central governments over the project.
Chief Minister K Palaniswami and several of his cabinet colleagues have defended the project, saying it would stimulate growth and that only a small section of farmers were opposing it.
