Sri Lankan driver gets life for sexual assault
A Mahila Fast Track Court in Karur on Tuesday awarded life sentence to a 32-year-old lorry driver, a native of Sri Lanka, for sexually assaulting a mentally challenged woman.

According to the prosecution, the incident happened in November 2016. The victim Dharani (38), was residing at Irumpoothipatti refugee camp in Kulithalai. Jambulingam alias Rajkumar, another inmate of the camp, forced her to come out of the house. He then took her to a deserted place where he sexually assaulted her.Â
Later, Dharani’s mother Sivabakkiyam found out the incident and lodged a complaint with the Kulithalai All Women Police station. Rajkumar was subsequently arrested. The case was being heard by the Mahila Fast Track Court. On Tuesday, when the case came up for hearing, Magistrate Sasikala awarded life imprisonment to accused.Â
The Magistrate also levied a fine of Rs 1,000 on Rajkumar, who was then taken to the Tiruchy prison.
