Youth held for burglary near Marakkanam

Senior Superintendent of Police Apoorva Gupta told news persons on Sunday that the beat police led by Kalapet Sub-Inspector Sivaprakasam intercepted a youth near Kanagachettikkulam when he was trying to run away on seeing the police.

On his arrest, he gave contradictory statements and was taken to the police station and interrogated. He confessed of committing the burglary in the house of Ravichandran at Kalapet and decamped with 37 sovereigns of gold.

Police recovered 34 sovereigns of gold from the youth Kamal alias Sreedharan (23). He was involved in house breaking at several places earlier, Gupta said.

She said, it came to light that a Tamil Nadu gang was involved in the thefts in Puducherry in the months of April and May last and steps are being taken to apprehend them at the earliest.

The SSP said that due to the intensive patrolling of police, theft cases came down considerably in the month of June compared to April and May last.
