Teen rescued after forced marriage, case against 5
Police have registered a case against five persons for allegedly forcing a 16-year-old girl into marriage.
Thiruchirapalli
The girl, a resident of Thuraiyur, married R Gandhi Kannan (32) at the Srirangam Singaperumal temple on Thursday. After receiving information about the minor marriage, a team led by the District Social Welfare Officer interrogated the girl’s parents, who claimed that the girl was 19 years.
However, the officials contacted the school where the girl studied and found out that she was underage. Subsequently, they lodged a complaint against Gandhi Kannan, his mother Saroja, the girl’s mother and two other relatives with the Srirangam All Women Police.Â
The police registered a case against the five persons and asked the minor girl to be produced before them. While the girl was brought back to Tiruchy, a special team has been formed to apprehend Gandhi Kannan, who reportedly told the girl’s family that he is working as a DRO in Tiruvallur district. Further investigations are on.
