    State announces salary hike for teachers in higher education, assistant professors get 47 per cent jump

    As per the order of the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Tamil Nadu government on Friday announced a salary hike for teachers in higher education in compliance with the Seventh Pay Commission.

    A government order stated that the revised pay structure for the different categories of teachers and equivalent positions was based on various methods including the formula followed by the Seventh Pay Commission.

    Accordingly, the assistance professor’s salary would also be increased with regard to seniority.

    The basic entry pay of the Assistant Professor, which they were getting at a pay scale of Rs 15,500 to 39,100, has been revised to a rationalised entry pay of Rs 57,700, which is about a 47% hike.

    Accordingly, the pay scales for teachers in universities and colleges will vary from the existing structure.

    The order further stated that there shall be only three designations with respect to teachers in Universities and Colleges, namely, Assistant Professors, Associate Professors and Professors.

    In addition, pay and special allowance of pro-vice chancellor of a university and vice-chancellor has also increased.

    Also, there shall be no change in the current designations in respect of Library and Physical Education Personnel at various levels.

    The order said allowances such as Leave Travel Concessions, House Rent Allowance, Travelling Allowance, Dearness Allowance and City Compensatory 

    Allowance will be on a par with the allowances applicable to State Government Employees with effect from October 1, 2017. The order clearly mentions 

    that this scheme shall be applicable to teachers and other equivalent cadres of Government colleges Government Aided colleges and Universities, governed by UGC. 

    However, the pay scale increment does not extend to Accompanists, Coaches, Tutors and Demonstrators and to the Posts of System Analysts, Senior Analysts and Research Officers.

    “Pay of the said categories of employee shall be fixed in the appropriate relative level of their existing Pay in each university in respect of state Government employees on the basis of the recommendations of the Commission,” the order said.
