He said that the party was of the opinion that the eight-lane Green Corridor Expressway project should be laid without affecting the farmers and works should be initiated only after public hearing. Speaking at a marriage function of a party office-bearer in Thanjavur on Monday he said, DMK was not against the Salem-Chennai Expressway. “How many thousands of farmers would be affected by the project, how much land needed to be acquired and what would be problems faced by the people should be thrashed out in a consultation with the public. After the public put forth their views, the project could be implemented,” he said.

Stating that the Chief Minister has been castigating the opposition parties of politicising the issue, Stalin said, that the visual media have been showing how the farmers are being harassed for the survey of the project. “Some of the farmers are taking the extreme step of committing suicide due to the project. An alternate alignment should be designed for the project by taking this into consideration, he stressed.

Charging the state of being adamant on the implementation of the project, Stalin said, “The state is not worried about all the objections, but hell bent on going ahead with the project eyeing a huge sum as commission.”

Wondering at the Chief Minister’s outrage on Baalu and accusing of taking commission for awarding road projects while he was the union transport minister, Stalin dared Palaniswami to file a case against Baalu.

“We have already submitted a petition with the Vigilance Commission with the details and evidence of financial irregularities allegedly committed by the Chief Minister. This would be soon heard in the courts. When the DMK comes to power, that would happen soon and people will watch who were going to jail (for corruption),” Stalin noted.
