Sukumar of Banadurai in Kumbakonam was working abroad, while his wife Vinitha was working in Tirupur. So, their children Kishore (5) and Dharani (3) were living with their maternal grandmother Chithra at Devanancheri.

On Friday, when Chithra approached a school in Devanancheri for admitting Kishore, the management reportedly asked for the Aadhaar card. Chithra along with Kishore and Dharani rushed to Banadurai in the scooter to fetch the Aadhaar card.

When they were near Kadichampadi, a blue metal-laden lorry from Vridhachalam to Pattukkottai rear-ended the scooter and in the impact, the family fell and Kishore was run over. Chithra and Dharani survived with minor injuries. Following the accident, the lorry driver fled the spot.

Meanwhile, residents, on getting to know about the incident, gathered at the spot, and alleged that the accident took place due to rash driving. Soon, they staged a road block in Kadichampadi on the Kumbakonam-Neelathanallur stretch and demanded a speed breaker in the area. A few of the protesters smashed the windscreen of the lorry which was involved in the accident.

On information, N Venkatachalam, Tashildar of Kumbakonam and S Ganesamurthy, Deputy Superintendent of Police, rushed to the spot and held talks with the protesters. Following this, the protest was withdrawn. Traffic was affected for about two hours on the road. The Swamimalai police registered a case.
