Replying to a question by AIADMK member Inbadurai and Congress legislator Prince in the Assembly, Sengottaiyan said “The AIADMK will continue to be the bulwark of minorities.
The abbreviations BC and AD will continue”.
Meanwhile, the National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET) issue once again became a hot topic in the Assembly with members from ruling and opposition parties trading charges.
K Rathamani, DMK MLA, during the debate on demand for grants for Backward Classes and Minority Welfare charged both Centre and state stating that the Centre willfully imposed NEET. He went a step further and stressed that since pass percentage in NEET is considerably low, it is high time the state focus on to improve the quality of NEET coaching centers. “Further, it should keep pressurising the Centre to exempt the state from NEET,” he said.
Replying to this, Sengottaiyan, said, “The fact remains that efforts are on to exempt NEET from the state. To increase the pass percentage, quality coaching classes are provided to the students.”
Meanwhile, Minister for Handloom and Textile, OS Manian recounted that the Centre during emergency in 1976 took away the state education list and added the same in the ‘Concurrent’ list. “The state is still fighting to retrieve the rights. Even as the DMK had been enjoying power with the Centre for 17 years, it had miserably failed to take appropriate steps to restore the system,” Manian charged. The response provoked DMK members and there was a heated argument between them.
K Ponmudi, DMK MLA, questioned the government as to why the AIADMK, which enjoyed power for 10 years, neglected it, while he raised it with Delhi as a minister.
