    DIET research projects to improve education

    The District Institute of Education and Training (DIET) under Tamil Nadu State Council of Education Research and Training (SCERT) will be undertaking various research project with regard to the improvement of school education and enhancing a student’s skill-set.

    Accordingly, the research projects will be focused on case studies of best practices in schools and diagnosis of learning disabilities and interventions.

    DIET will also carry out case studies of best practices in schools, impact of ‘Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation’, educational issues related to underprivileged children, problems of students in middle and high schools, reasons for students lagging behind in academics and strategies to address the issues.

    In addition to these, the DIET will look into the problems of primary school children in reading, writing and speaking and problems in understanding mathematics.

    SCERT, in coordination with Alagappa University, Bharathiar University and Tamil Nadu Teachers Education University will scrutinize and review the research activities. Periodical interactive sessions will be conducted to enhance the understanding of the DIET faculty in research methodology and the ability to interpret research findings to enhance the quality of teaching learning processes.

    In addition, SCERT will also organise a series of zonal research workshops and will approve action research proposals. These action researches are done in collaboration with school teachers.

    The findings of the research projects and action researches are being consolidated in a research compendium and will be disseminated through district and state level conferences benefiting all stakeholders of school education.

    The members of the Joint Review Mission of the MHRD has recently appreciated SCERT and DIETs for the state and District Level Quantitative Researches undertaken. They recommended to take on qualitative researches as well in future. In connection to this, a two-day workshop was organized by SCERT, involving faculty members of DIETs and SCERT. Two case studies drawn from India and foreign countries were explained in detail. 

    The training focused on identifying research problems. In this training, 64 DIET faculty members gained deep insight into the methods of undertaking qualitative research.
