Two days after a huge cache of ammunition and explosives were unearthed behind a house of a fisherman at Thangachimadam village in Ramanathapuram district, Thiruvadanai Judicial Magistrate Balamurugan, who is in-charge of Rameswaram, on Wednesday inspected the site and took stock of the weapons.

The inspection, which commenced around 10 am, lasted for about an hour. The ammunition was kept wrapped in polythene sheet amid sand bags.
Considering the huge quantity of explosives such as gun powder, TNT slabs, landmines and detonator cable that have been found, armed guards are keeping a tight vigil, Rameswaram Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), M Mahesh told DT Next.
Later, the Magistrate visited the Armed Reserve police camp in Rameswaram, where over 10,000 live rounds of ammunition and grenades were stocked.
Based on a report from the Magistrate, the explosives would be destroyed. Some of the ammunitions were foreign-made, the DSP said.
Three Bomb Detection and Disposal Squads also examined the site at the coastal village.
“Based on a complaint lodged by Rameswaram Tahsildar Abdul Jabar, Thangachimadam police have registered a case under Sections 4 and 5 of Explosive Substances Act and 25 of Arms Act,” Mahesh said.
The DSP recalled that large quantities of arms and ammunition were unearthed during 1989-1990 at various locations in Dhanushkodi, Pamban and Mandapam in Ramanathapuram district.
