The fallen object was later identified to be a defunct satellite belonging to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). It is believed that the satellite was used to analyse moisture content in the atmosphere.
According to the Srirangam police, the control room received a call from a person stating that a mysterious object attached to a parachute had fallen from the sky on Wednesday morning. A police patrol team rushed to the site, recovered the fallen object and took it to the police station.
Later, the District Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad personnel examined the object and confirmed that it did not contain any explosive material. A further examination revealed the equipment belonged to the IMD and had been sent into the upper atmosphere using a balloon to analyse moisture. A police officer said, “It has been confirmed the object belongs to the IMD and was used for monitoring climate changes and atmospheric moisture condition.”
