Plea to upgrade civic bodies in south suburbs
Responding to the demands from the DMK legislator SR Raja to upgrade local bodies of Agaramthen, Mudichur, Perungalathur and Chitlapakkam, Municipal Administration Minister SP Velumani on Monday said upgradation of the local bodies in the extension areas would be undertaken by the government as per the existing norms.

The issue was raised in the Assembly by Tambaram MLA who wanted to know whether the government would upgrade Agaramthen and Mudichur Panchayats into Town Panchayats.
As Velumani explained the norms laid down with regards to the population factor and the revenue index would have to be complied with by the respective local bodies. “On fulfilling such conditions, the local bodies can adopt resolutions seeking for upgradation and forward it to the government for consideration,” he said.
Raja, referring to woes of garbage and drinking water supply in Chitlapakkam, sought the state to upgrade Perungalathur and Chitlapakkam to Town Panchayats and to upgrade Tambaram into Corporation.
