When a petition filed by VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan seeking a CBI probe into the incident, came up for hearing, the first Bench of Madras High Court ordered that all the cases registered in connection with the firing incident be transferred to it.

The Bench also directed all the cases registered in connection with the incident should be listed before the Court on July two afternoon and ordered notice to the Tamil Nadu government on the plea for a CBI probe into it.

Soon after the incident, several cases were filed both in the Madurai Bench and also at the Madras High Court demanding a CBI probe and action against the police personnel involved in the incident.

It may be recalled that on June 19, the First Bench of Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice P T Asha opined that the Thoothukudi police firing incident was a fit case to be probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Meanwhile, a team from the National Commission for Schedule Castes (NCSC) led by its Vice-Chairman L Murugan is scheduled to visit Thoothukudi and enquire with the families of victims, four of whom belonged to the Scheduled Castes.

The NCSC team would begin its three-day enquiry from June 28. The affected persons can give their opinions and place demands before the Commission during the enquiry, which would be held in the Thoothukudi Corporation’s West Zone office building located at Millerpuram in Thoothukudi.
