    Kovai court grants bail to Ameer in hate speech case

    A court in Coimbatore on Monday granted conditional bail to film director Ameer in connection with a case for promoting religious enmity during a roundtable discussion organised by a private television channel in Coimbatore.

    The Peelamedu police registered a case recently against the director for his inflammatory speech. The discussion was cancelled midway and cases were registered against Ameer, the TV channel and its correspondent after few BJP cadre raised objection and created a ruckus at the venue of the meet.

    On hearing the bail plea, the third Additional District Judge C Sanjai Baba granted conditional bail to Ameer. Meanwhile, the Peelamedu police summoned Ameer for an inquiry. He was inquired by Assistant Commissioner Suresh and Peelamedu Inspector Selvaraj.

    Speaking to media, after the inquiry session, Ameer said that all the recent arrests made in Tamil Nadu are against an individual’s right to freedom of expression.

    Stating that everyone knew how police dealt with the case of S Ve Shekher, Ameer said, “The courts however do not accept these arrests and grants bail. We could feel proud that justice is on our side. The police questioned me on a few issues and I gave my reply to them. I also sought protection for myself.”
