Police fired to instill fear in protesters: VCK chief
The Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) has on Friday staged a demonstration, demanding closure of Sterlite Copper Smelter Plant in Thoothukudi and also to shift the shooting case to the CBI.
Chennai
Led by party Chief Thol Thirumavalavan, the VCK cadre in Chepauk raised slogans against the state government and Vedanta group. The party also demanded a solatium of Rs 1 crore to kin of the deceased in the firing incident.
Addressing the gathering, Thirumavalavan said, “The incident was a state sponsored terrorism in Thoothukudi. Even after the incident, all the opposition parties called for a total shutdown, but there is no consistence among the political parties to keep the Thoothukudi incident live and this could be a victory for the ruling party.”
The Thoothukudi incident was to instill a sense of fear among the public and firing was deliberately resorted to so that no protest takes place across the state against the government, he said.
HC moved for court monitored CBI probe
The Viduthalai Chirutaigal Katchi (VCK) has moved the Madras High Court seeking to direct the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to hold a court monitored probe into the police firing that took place in Thoothukudi on May 22 and May 23 against anti-Sterlite protesters that claimed 13 lives.
In the absence of the first bench headed by Chief Justice, the matter came up before the division bench comprising Justice R Subbaiah and Justice C Saravanan on Friday, which adjourned the hearing to June 25.
VCK president Thol Thirumavalavan on narrating the details of the incidents in his petition submitted that the state police without any warning and following any procedures opened fire at the protesting mob, which claimed the lives of 13 persons and injured hundreds.
Submitting that the way the demonstrating public was attacked by the police using combative and aggressive measures amounted to gross violation of human rights, the petitioner noted that since the state police is an offender with the involvement of government and district officials, a free and fair investigation cannot be expected by the state police and the authorities.
Hence, it is just and necessary for an independent agency to register an FIR for the alleged offences of murder/human rights violations against the Collector, SP and other police officials, the petitioner submitted and sought for a court monitored CBI probe.
