SHG pioneer Chinnapillai wins Avvaiyar award for 2018
The Government on Wednesday conferred Avvaiyar award 2018 on P Chinnapillai from Pullucheri village near Madurai for forming 2,589 Self Help Groups (SHGs) which have been instrumental in transforming the lives of rural women and improving their economic conditions.

In appreciation of her efforts, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami conferred the award on her in an event in the Secretariat. Chinnapillai was earlier awarded Stree Shakti Puraskar by the Centre in 2000 for her contributions in empowerment of women.
She was instrumental in forming as many as 2,589 SHGs besides holding free medical camps for women and encouraging them to undertake organic cultivations.
Chinnapillai heads Kalanjiam, a movement by the women SHGs, which has been rendering their service for nearly three decades.
The 66-year old has been doling out loans to the members and the public for the purposes of agriculture and education, besides creating awareness on availing loans for goats and cows, among others.
The award comprises of a citation, a gold medal (weighing 8 gram), a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh, and a shawl. The Avvaiyar awards were instituted by the former chief minister J Jayalalithaa and is being disbursed since 2012.
At the event here, Palaniswami also launched the disbursal of subsidy of Rs 7 lakh each for 149 best low-budget Tamil movies made during the period 2007 - 2014. A total of Rs 10.43 crore would be disbursed to producers of the chosen films.
