Class 10 girl married to 28-yr-old rescued

The wedding of Pichai (28), a farm labourer, was arranged on Monday with a girl from Manachanallur. When the preparations were on, the bride reportedly eloped. As the wedding was arranged, both the sides decided to go ahead with it though the bride now was the original woman’s 15-year-old sister. Subsequently, the parents took Pichai and the minor to Kodumudi and the wedding took place the same day.

Meanwhile, information about the wedding of Pichai and the minor reached the village in Manachanallur. The villagers passed on the information to the officials of the Revenue department and police. Later, social welfare officials along with the Childline lodged a police complaint. Based on the complaint, the police registered a case. Soon, the officials rescued the minor and she was handed over to the Child Welfare Committee and was lodged in the child protection home.

The officials said the minor was not willing to get married and wanted to continue her studies. But, her parents and the groom insisted that she get married to save their dignity. They said the parents and the groom would be arrested if needed.
