BSNL employees will wage a legal fight against the Central government over its decision to hive off its 66,000 towers into a subsidiary unit, said National Federation of Telecom Employees (NFTE) vice-president CK Mathivanan on Tuesday.

Stating that the move is the first step of privatising BSNL, he told media persons, “We staged a series of hunger strikes against this decision but the government has been firm until now. Hence, we have approached the Delhi High Court.”
Vacancies in the Stateowned telecom company have not been filled since 1983. In the past five years, with the retirement of over 60,000 employees, the ratio of employees per 1,000 connections has come down drastically.
As a result, the workload of serving employees has increased, Mathivanan said. Various employee unions and associations of BSNL are planning to hold a meeting regarding the future of course of action, he said, warning that their nationwide protest would be intensified in the coming days.
