Vijaya Baskar makes 108 announcements for healthcare
Accident and trauma care was high on the agenda of state Health Minister C Vijaya Baskar, who made a whopping 108 announcements, highest for any ministry so far, in the ongoing budget session of the state Assembly.

Replying to the debate on demand for grants for Health Ministry, Vijaya Baskar announced the setting up of trauma and emergency care centers at Government Royapettah Hospital, medical college hospitals in Coimbatore and Chengalpet, district headquarters hospitals in Kallakurichi and Kumbakonam, Tiruvallur, Government taluk hospitals in Harur and Tindivanam, primary health centre in Shoolagiri, Government taluk hospital in Sriperumbudur, all under Tamil Nadu Accident and Emergency Care Initiative (TAEI) at a total cost of Rs 36.78 crore.
While announcing the creation of 141 staff nurse posts for 18 district headquarters hospitals under TAEI and special training on accident and emergency management to all medical officers and staff nurses of TAEI hospitals, the Minister also proposed to partner with IIT-Madras to strengthen the dynamic allocation of 108 Emergency Ambulance Service based on accident and trauma occurrences.
Vijaya Baskar also offered to provide a linear accelerator each to Government Multi-Super Specialty Hospital in Omandurar Government Estate in Chennai, Thoothukudi Government Medical College Hospital, Govt Arignar Anna Memorial Cancer Hospital at Karapettai in Kancheepuram at a cost of Rs 50 crore.
The government has also announced Rs 13.50 crore to provide CT Scans to several hospitals including the Institute of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Egmore, Institute of Social Obstetrics and Government Kasturba Gandhi Hospital for Women and Children, Chennai and Government Raja Sir Ramaswamy Mudaliar Hospital in the city.
Healthy Dose
- Rs 3 crore to supply mobile X-ray units to tuberclosis units in 10 districts.
- Rs 4.30 crore to undertake investigation and research for the use of Adult Stem Cells in patients with end stage liver disease in Govt Stanley Medical College Hospital.
- Viral Hepatitis Monitoring Centre will be established at RGGH in Chennai.
- Rs 2 crore to provide Nilavembu Kudineer to prevent Dengue and Chickengunya and raise awareness on the same.
- Rs 4.23 crore to provide Special Drugs and High-end equipment to Institute of Research and Rehabilitation of Hand and Department of Plastic Surgery in Govt Stanley Medical College Hospital.
- Rs 6.63 crore for Current Good Manufacturing Practice facilities for stem cell research and treatment at Govt Stanley Medical College Hospital.
- Rs 4.79 crore for dedicated operation theatre with modern facilities and separate ward for Institute of Research and Rehabilitation of Hand and Department of Plastic Surgery in Govt Stanley Medical College Hospital.
- Rs 27.34 crore to provide generator and high-tension electricity connections to 19 government hospitals.
- Rs 37 crore to strengthen hospital management system in 309 GHs, 22 medical college hospitals and 55 medical college attached hospitals and extension of the same to all 105 PHCs in Ramanathapuram and Virudhunagar districts.
- Rs 18.84 crore to provide specialty drugs for treatment of rare genetic diseases such as Thalassemia and Hemophilia to all govt medical college hospitals.
- Free NEET coaching centers for PG admission for all medical officers in health dept and compulsory rotatory residential internship.
- Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University will sign a MoU with Australian University for Health Service Management training for all medical officers in health department and students of Govt medical college hospitals to become Good Public Health Managers.
- 24x7 tele-psychiatric free counselling services and medical advices will be provided in all districts through 104 Call Centre and in coordination with NGOs to protect mental health of youngsters.
- Rs 20 lakh to create dedicated website and app for food safety department to raise public awareness.
- Rs 15 lakh to establish Food Safety Hubs in 100 tourist locations in the state.
- Four-year paramedical degree courses will be started in all Govt medical college hospitals
- Rs 16 lakh to train and demonstrate detection of food adulteration to all govt higher secondary school students
- Rs 10.85 crore to establish Clinical Simulation Labs at six Govt medical college hospitals, including RGGH in Chennai .
- Rs 3.25 crore to provide high-end Ophthalmic equipment to Govt Medical College Hospital at Kilpauk and Thanjavur.
- Rs 2.34 crore to set up satellite clinics by creating psychiatric posts to provide treatment to mentally ill patients based on tour program to special hospitals on special dates.
- Rs 28 crore to modernise existing cobalt units at RGGH, Stanley, Royapettah, Institute of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Egmore, and Arignar Anna Memorial Cancel Hospital Karapettai, Madurai, Thanjavur, Tirunelveli, Salem and Coimbatore.
